Always the Elf -- Kimberly Jensen

It's never too early to be on the lookout for great Christmas gifts, and this fun children's picture book is a perfect present for the young family on your list.

Tasia is frustrated. Her class is getting ready for their annual Christmas play, and she hoped to be chosen to be the ballerina, or even the teddy bear. But no, she's the elf again. Why is she always the elf?

Her mother takes the opportunity to tell her a special story.

Many hundreds of years ago, there was a village of elves whose job it was to create beautiful buttons and deliver them all over the world for humans to use on their clothing. Brams the Elf loved his job as a button deliveryman, and as he traveled, he looked for beautiful fabric to add to his own personal collection.

One day, he found a large piece of green felt in the trash can at one of the factories on his route. He didn't know what he would do with it, but he decided to take it home anyway.

He forgot all about it until one day, while making a delivery in a far-off land. He saw a large group of people gathered around a cave, and he crept closer to see what was going on. A tiny baby lay inside the cave, and he was told that this was the newborn King of Kings.

Brams ran home to tell the other elves what he had seen, and they were so excited, they wanted to give the King a present. No matter what they thought of, it just didn't seem good enough, until Brams had an idea. They could make a pledge to serve each other and to speak in kind words. Everyone loved this idea, and to remind them of their commitment, Brams took his green felt and created hats for them to wear, a symbol of their desire to serve. To this day, all elves wear green felt hats, and when Santa set up his workshop in the North Pole, elves were the perfect people to help him in his quest to spread Christmas cheer.

When Tasia's mother finished the story, Tasia felt much better about her role, and wore her green felt costume with pride.

The rich illustrations, provided by Glenn Harmon, are the perfect accompaniment to the story. Grab a copy and read it aloud to your family around the Christmas tree this year!
